CES 2010 Coverage

Theta Digital

Nothing new to see from Theta.

Regarding the HDMI upgrade to the Casablanca III, I had a long conversation with Mike Pontelle. Mike is a very congenial individual, in my estimation a straight-shooter, and generous with his time.

The HDMI upgrade is not ready and Mike was unwilling to commit to a date when it would be ready. He said that it is in Alpha testing now, but there remain software issues to address. He reiterated that he would not ship the upgrade until it was ready for prime time. The last thing he wants to do is ship out a buggy upgrade.

I learned that the upgrade with consist of four new boards and a new display. The four boards consist of an HDMI board, a new digital board for decoding the lossless codecs, a new power supply board, and a new display logic board (in addition to the new display). The upgrade price has not been definitely set, but he estimates it will be $5,000.

The Compli-Blu universal Blu-ray player begins shipping next week.
