T.H.E. Show (Newport Beach) 2012 Coverage

June 8, 2012

The Audio Research, Kronos, Scaena and VAC Room

Scaena showed its Spiritus 3.6 line-array loudspeakers coupled with a pair of three-driver subwoofers known as the Trifecta Subwoofer System (together with the Spiritus 3.6s ($130,000). The bass was much better integrated than the last time I heard them, undoubtedly due to the larger room this time around. Still not seamless though. These line arrays and their accompanying subwoofers simply need a big room to show at their best.

The loudspeakers were driven by a pair of VAC Statement 450 monoblock amplifiers ($78,000/pair), one of which is shown below.

The vinyl source was a Kronos counter-rotating, dual-platter turntable ($28,000) with Graham Phantom Supreme 12″ tonearm ($6000) and Clearaudio Goldfinger Statement cartridge ($15,000).

Gain and loading for the cartridge were provided by an Audio Research Reference Phono 2 phono stage ($11,995).

An Audio Research Reference CD8 CD player was called upon as the digital source ($9995).

Volume and source selection were handled by a VAC Signature Mk2a preamp ($19,500).

Power from the hotel outlets was conditioned by an Audience Adept aR-12-TSS power conditioner ($10,000), and MIT provided over $100,000 of interconnects and speaker cables.
