The Audio Research, Spiral Groove, and Wilson Audio
Sunny’s Audio took the simple, but high quality, approach mating a pair of Wilson Sophia 3 loudspeakers with a front end from Spiral Groove and electronics from Audio Research.
The centerpiece was Audio Research’s new Reference 75 75 watt/channel stereo power amplifier ($9995). It comes in the same size chassis and uses the same power supply as the twice as powerful Reference 150 ($12,995), but with fewer tubes required there is room for a really cool looking pair of front-panel meters.
The more powerful, but now mundane looking, Reference 150 power amplifier was relegated to a corner.
The analog source was a Spiral Groove SG1.1 turntable ($25,000) with Centroid tonearm ($5000) and Dynavector Te Kaitora cartridge ($3350). Suprisingly, instead of the Audio Research Reference Phono 2 phono stage ($11,995), they used a Boulder 1021 ($12,000) (not shown).
Digital files were played back through the Audio Research DAC8 digital to analog converter ($4995).
Handling source selection and volume control was the Audio Research Reference 5 preamplifier ($12,995).
