Twenty years ago I owned Thiel speakers. Being a typical obsessive-compulsive audiophile, I thought I heard something wrong with one of the speakers. Thiel’s...

Emotiva Audio Corporation, the company that delivers reference-quality performance at prices people can afford, is now shipping the UPA-500 and UPA-200—the first two models in its revamped Ultra Series line of entry level audiophile electronics. These new amplifiers were designed to satisfy the most discerning aficionado, and at the same time are affordable to anyone with a desire for real quality.
At barely over half the height of the UPA-5 model it replaces, the UPA-500 still delivers a robust 80 watts of power per channel—that’s 80 watts of real power per channel into eight ohms, with all channels driven, an important distinction from the way many consumer audio products are rated. Into four ohms, the UPA-500 is capable of 120 watts per channel with all channels driven. It’s also fully capable of driving the most difficult loads.
With its heavy duty power supply and oversized toroidal transformer, wide flat frequency response, remarkably low noise and distortion, bulletproof protection, and heavy duty construction, the UPA-500 sets a new performance-to-price standard in today’s audio market. It’s the perfect match for the Emotiva UMC-1 7.1 Channel Preamplifier/Processor in terms of styling, price, and performance, but also works as a substantial upgrade to the anemic, underpowered amplifiers built into most modern surround sound receivers.
Joining the UPA-500 is a newly designed two-channel model for the Ultra Series. With its robust 125 watts per channel into eight ohms (or 200 watts per channel into four ohms) and wideband, short signal path, class AB design topology, the UPA-200 stands on its own and pairs perfectly with Emotiva’s USP-1 Stereo Preamp, and also complements the UPA-500 in a seven (or more) channel surround sound setup.
Both amplifiers gold-plated RCA input terminals and gold-plated five-way binding posts; 115 VAC or 230 VAC operation, with automatic detection and switching; and integrated protection against excessive operating temperature, shorted speaker connections, ground faults, and other common fault conditions.
“In designing the UPA-500 and UPA-200, we really listened to feedback from our fans and laid the foundation for a new Ultra Series that’s undeniably distinct from other home audio lines,” says Dan Laufman, President of Emotiva. “In addition to the new internal designs, we’ve also added some external touches that we believe fans will appreciate—like a Stealth Mode that disables the front panel status LEDs and Standby button halo lighting.”
The Emotiva UPA-500 and UPA-200 are available now for $399 and $349, respectively, exclusively at www.emotiva.com.
